DAP vs GE Sealants vs Gorilla: Reviews, Social, and Website Comparison

How the three brands stack up on the things customers and shoppers actually touch: product reviews at retail, social media and advertising, and the features on each brand's own website. Written as improvement opportunities for DAP.

The volume story behind the stars

Gorilla's sealants rate a touch higher per product, but on roughly 1 to 2 percent of DAP's review volume: 75 to 198 reviews against Alex Plus at 10,805. Many Gorilla sealant reviews were collected on its own site, some through promotions. DAP's review depth is a trust asset the other two do not have. Read any single rating next to its review count before drawing conclusions.

What unhappy reviewers say, by brand

DAP

Shrinking and cracking is the dominant theme, then never curing or washing away (Kwik Seal Plus), mold despite mold-resistance claims, color mismatch, and packaging with no way to reseal. Brand replies often cite label exclusions, which reads as blame to the reviewer.

GE Sealants

Yellowing within months, clear product curing milky white, pink mold despite claims, confusion about the paintable line, and defective tubes, including one reviewer who found a tube expired years before purchase.

Gorilla

Far fewer complaints in absolute terms. Its weak spot is Patch & Seal Paste at 3.8 stars, not its caulks. The sealant complaint base is thin because the review base is thin.

Why the kitchen & bath flagships sit at 37% recommend

DAP Kwik Seal Plus and GE Supreme Silicone both show only 37% recommend. That shared number is not one problem. It is three, and two of them are fixable with content.

1. Part of it is the metric itself

GE Supreme holds about 75% five-star ratings across roughly 4,480 reviews, yet still shows 37% recommend. The recommend field and the star rating are measuring different things, with different response samples. Reading recommend on its own overstates the failure.

2. Part of it is expectation-setting

Headline claims are what shoppers remember: "30-minute water ready," "paintable." The limits sit in fine print. GE reviewers wrote that the product is "not actually 30 minute water ready as it claims if you read the instructions," and "This is not paintable!" on the paintable line. DAP's version is clear sealant that applies white and takes 7 to 14 days to turn clear. When the headline wins and the fine print loses, the product gets the blame in the review.

3. Part of it is job fit and prep

Excluded uses (butt joints, continuous underwater exposure), water before full cure, joints too deep with no backer rod, and sealing over old or dirty sealant. All three brands publish tutorials and how-tos, so the gap is not missing instructions. The gap is placement: instructions live on brand websites, while the decision happens at the store shelf and the failure happens at the joint.

Six ways to get ahead of it

Screen before purchase

A guided finder that asks about showers, paint, and standing water, and rules out the wrong product before it is bought.

Say what it is not for

A plain-language "do not use for" box and a skin, water-ready, and full-cure timeline graphic on product pages, pushed to retailer pages where reviews actually happen.

Meet the user at the joint

A QR code on the tube that opens a 3-minute project video and the exact wait times, at the moment of use.

Catch prep mistakes early

A coverage calculator plus a joint-prep checklist that flags depth and backer rod issues before the bead goes down.

Fix the small packaging things

Resealable caps and easy-to-read date codes, two recurring complaint drivers that need no new technology.

Work the reviews as data

Answer retailer questions fast, and manage the mix of 1-star causes month to month instead of watching the recommend percentage.

US Meta ads, active nowNot confirmedNot confirmedNot confirmed

Scope note: Gorilla's accounts cover its whole adhesives and tapes franchise, not sealants only, so part of its scale advantage is scope. DAP still trails on engagement, TikTok, giveaways, and visible comment replies, and GE slightly leads DAP on Facebook while DAP leads GE about seven to one on Instagram.

On the ad status

US Meta ad status is marked "not confirmed" for all three brands because the Meta Ad Library could not be checked for this report, and the library only shows currently active ads in any case. The only dated paid evidence found anywhere is Gorilla UK, which ran a Meta campaign for its Grab & Seal sealant (static and carousel) from October 7 to November 1, 2026, in the UK, not the US. DAP's provable paid activity is creator partnerships and sponsorships; GE benefits from creator distribution.

Spanish: an empty lane, and DAP holds the head start

No Spanish-language US Meta ads and no Spanish posts on the US accounts were found in searching for DAP, GE, or Gorilla, and the same holds for Henkel siblings Loctite and OSI. That is "none found in searching," not a verified zero; a manual Ad Library check filtered to Spanish and the United States is still needed. The Spanish assets that do exist sit outside the US: DAP already runs es.dap.com, a full Spanish site; DAP México has 18K Facebook followers and a Spanish product Reel with about 1,300 likes; and RPM sibling Rust-Oleum Latinoamérica (180K followers) has posted DAP products in Spanish. GE has no brand Spanish presence beyond retailer translations, and Gorilla's Spanish presence is a small Spain account and a Colombian distributor. A US Spanish Meta test would be first-mover territory, and DAP would not need to build the landing pages from scratch.

Improvement opportunities for DAP

  1. Restore a guided product finder on the main site. GE merchandises one on its homepage; DAP's selector is stranded on a legacy subdomain. It also screens out the wrong-use purchases behind many 1-star reviews.
  2. Show reviews and Q&A on DAP's own product pages. The reviews already exist and syndicate out to Home Depot and Target labeled "from DAP.com." The product page is the one place they are missing.
  3. Fix the Alex Plus kitchen and bath message. The product page promotes high-moisture kitchen and bath use while its own FAQ says not for showers and DAP's retailer replies say it is not a kitchen and bath sealant. One clear answer, everywhere.
  4. Own the coverage calculator. No brand in the set has one, third-party sites rank for the query, and DAP's technical data already contains the coverage math.
  5. Add an always-on expert chat. Gorilla's 24/7 AI assistant is the clearest single feature gap. DAP's FAQs and technical data are the knowledge base to ground it in.
  6. Make warranty claims self-serve. A claim form with status tracking would replace a mail-in process that BBB and review complaints already flag, and no competitor offers one.
  7. Attack the Kwik Seal Plus cure problem with content. A cure timeline graphic and a plain "do not use for" box on the product page and the retailer page, aimed at the never-cured complaint cluster.
  8. Add homepage social proof and email signup. GE embeds its Instagram feed; Gorilla captures email on its homepage. Both are low-cost modules absent from dap.com.
  9. Upgrade where to buy in phases. SKU-level retailer deep links first, live inventory later. The legacy locator showing "No Sellers Found" should not be the experience.
  10. Run a US Spanish pilot. Translate the finder and the top product pages, and test Spanish Meta ads against es.dap.com. The category lane is empty and the assets already exist.
  11. Post on a visible social cadence. Regular posting, giveaway and community hooks, replies to comments, and a TikTok test. Gorilla's giveaway mechanic alone out-comments everything else in the category.
